With new statistics being released that say Burglaries have increased by 4% on last year; many homeowners are having to strengthen their defences. If you haven’t already it may be time for you to take a good look at your home and reassess your crime prevention precautions.

Garages tend to be a prime entry point for thieves and robbers. Many homeowners tend to have access directly in to their home through the garage, usually through a conjoining door. This is usually left unlocked and not seen as an exterior door. If thieves can penetrate your garage then they have easy access to the rest of your home.

These types of doors are also insulated around the perimeter and fit tight to the wall and floor. This leaves no gaps around the door at all, making it unlikely for any thief to be able to jammy the door.

When you have a few minutes take some time to have a good look at the exterior and interior security of you house as well as your habits and attitudes. Look at your house through a thief’s eyes. If you were going to break in to the house where would you start? Take extra time to assess your garage. Teach your family the habit of locking the door that joins the house and garage.

Extra tips for your security

- Always lock all doors and windows when you go out. Even if your only out for a short time.

- Never leave spare keys outside or in your garage or shed. No matter how well you hide them they may be found and used.

- Do not leave garden tools or ladder lying around in your garden. They may be used to gain entry to your house.

- If you have a dog in the premises then display a sign advertising this fact. It will scare burglars away and your post man will appreciate it too!
